05-ginkaku.jpg This is Ginkakuji, the so-called silver temple in Kyoto. It is not, as the name would imply, silver at all, although the story is that at one point some old guy had planned to coat the whole thing in silver in a similar fashion to Kinkakuji, the ridiculously famous Golden Temple in Kyoto. As it is, Ginkakuji seems pretty beat up. You can even see in my crummy picture that the wood seems kinda weathered. They say it makes it look more distinguished. Ginkakuji 02-kobeday.jpg This is a shot of Kobe during the daytime. Its a pretty harborfront city, and reminds me of Baltimore in a lot of ways. But it is a lot bigger and has a really great Chinatown, compared to Baltimore. And there's that whole earthquake thing. And of course, Kobe is still a thriving industry and shipping hub, while Baltimore has long since seen its best days and faded pretty much away. Kobe - daytime 08-kinkaku2.jpg Like I was saying, the grounds around Kinkakuji were really cool. Here's another shot of it from the mountain behind it. I kinda wished they'd get rid of the big honking golden pavilion, so that there would be fewer people tromping around the grounds. Another view of Kinkakuji 03-kobenight.jpg This is Kobe at night, shot from a big Ferris Wheel in the downtown amusement park. Kobe - nighttime 09-ghioji.jpg Ghioji was my favorite place in Kyoto. It is a small and not famous temple in the mountains north of Arashiyama. I liked it so much because it was quiet and peaceful and relaxing, and I spent a long time there even though there wasn't anything really to do, except look at this cool rainbow. Ghioji 01-fuji.jpg On the way to Kobe, I could see Mt. Fuji from the Shinkansen, looming over the environment. It was enormous and very impressive, and almost as otherworldly as it looks in this picture. Unfortunately, I am pretty sure that this thing is going to blow up soon and kill us all. Mt. Fuji 04-ladiesonly.jpg Because of the amount of perverts who grope or otherwise harass women on over-crowded trains, Kobe has restricted certain cars to women only. Ladies Only 07-kinkaku.jpg This is Kinkakuji, maybe the most famous site in Kyoto. Everyone who goes to Kyoto has to go here, and take this picture. Its a pretty cool temple though, even if it is covered in real gold, at least for the top two stories. And the grounds around it were really great; very tranquil. Kinkakuji 06-basu.jpg Buses in Kyoto do a really cool thing. All of the poles at the bus stations are networked with each other, and with the buses, so the poles know when a bus arrives at a station. So the poles at other stations can tell waiting riders that their bus is one stop away or two stops away or whatever. Bus Radar
