The offending option
Recently I have been having a puzzling problem with my computer, which is pretty rare. The processor was constantly running at 100% usage, even though I wasn't really doing anything. It had been happening for about the past week or so. I could not figure out what the hell it was. I thought that it was some other program going crazy, but all the monitors I have pointed to it being the Finder itself. I tried uninstalling all sorts of stuff, and none of it had any effect. But eventually I figured it out. Turns out there is an option in icon view mode called "Show Item Info" which predictably enough shows info about the items which are in the window. So if there are pictures, it shows the width and height underneath the name, or if they are music or movie files, it shows the length. But there is an option to set this for all windows, and it seems that if you set this on, it starts grinding away at all this calculations and chokes up pretty severely. I couldn't find anything about it on the internet, so I writing this here in case anyone has a similar problem. But once I turned this option off, and then quit the Finder, processor usage returned to normal.
