Gioji is one of my favorite places in Kyoto. It's an out-of-the-way temple in Arashiyama, and it's always pretty quiet and empty. In fall, the leaves are really nice here, and it's a good place to sit and relax when you get sick of touristing around Kyoto. It was founded in the Heian Era(794-1185) by Gio, a concubine who ran away after the guy was in love with rejected her. She devoted her life to Buddhism and built this place to hide out in the woods outside of Kyoto.
