Every Monday we have a long free time with the homeroom. It's not a class, but I have to come up with something entertaining and probably educational to do with that time. So I have been showing them music videos on the TV, and making them write their opinions of them. Last week I showed them Michael Jackson's Thriller. The thumbs up/thumbs down vote came out split evenly, with a lot of kids wavering because the dancing was cool but Michael Jackson is gross. A lot of kids were put off because they couldn't figure out the meaning; why did those zombies pop up and then start dancing like that? And was MJ supposed to be a werewolf at the end? They couldn't quite deal with the ambiguity. This week I showed them Junior Senior's "Move your feet". They liked that one a lot more and voted positively 2-to-1. They liked all the cute little NES-era graphics, although several of the kids were once again confounded by their own hangups regarding deeper meaning in everything. Anybody got any suggestions about what I should show them next?
